United Nations – The Nippon Foundation Fellowship offers a program in Marine Science designed to empower government officials and other mid-career professionals from developing nations. The fellowship focuses on strengthening their understanding of maritime affairs and maritime law, along with related fields such as administrative frameworks. Fellows will gain insights into the international legal framework, key challenges, and best practices within maritime affairs. They will also become familiar with the United Nations' work and develop essential professional skills. Furthermore, Fellows will engage in individual research under the guidance of academic experts, culminating in the writing of essays on a topic of their choosing.
Fellows are expected to **return to their home countries** upon completing the Fellowship. They will leverage their in-depth knowledge and extensive experience to contribute to the development of a comprehensive United Nations Convention on Maritime Policy and Law. They will also help enforce the established legal system. Eligibility Criteria for UN Fellowship:
The United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2025 is open to students who meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Applicants must be between the ages of 25 and 40 years old.
- Applicants must have successfully completed their first university degree and be able to demonstrate the ability to conduct independent advanced academic research and study.
- Applicants must be a mid-level professional working for a national government agency in a developing state, or for another government or non-government agency in a state that deals directly with maritime affairs. Their professional position must allow them to assist their nation in policy formulation and/or implementation in the region. This includes the relationship between marine sciences and science policy. The “Nomination and Recommendation Form” must be completed by a government official or other official who can verify the nature of the applicant's work in relation to the government's maritime affairs and maritime activities law, and explain how the award will directly benefit these activities.
- The applicant's proposed research and study program should directly assist in the formation and/or enforcement of their nation's maritime affairs and maritime policies and programs.
- Applicants must be free of all non-association responsibilities throughout the fellowship period unless authorized by the Division.
